Dr. Balázs Járay

cytopathologist, pathologist
My main areas of interest are the cytopathology of liver, pancreas, thyroid, breast and lymph node diseases, gynecological cytology, and the histology of pancreatic and liver tumors. During my work, I have tried to use modern examination methods in cytological and histological examinations, such as immunocytochemistry, electron microscopy, molecular pathology examinations on aspirates, etc. I participate in specialist training, as well as in postgraduate training and PhD education, which means dozens of lectures per year. I perform aspiration cytology in three private health centers in Budapest, where I take samples from suspicious lesions myself under ultrasound guidance and the cytopathological findings are available within 24 hours.

I completed my university studies at the Faculty of General Medicine of Semmelweis University of Medicine, and received my general medical degree with cum laude in 1987.

After graduation, I was employed at the pathology department of the National Institute of Rheumatology and Physiotherapy, where, under the supervision of Prof. Dezső Tanka, I mainly dealt with the pathology of autoimmune diseases and the study of bone diseases. In addition to the above, I also performed gynecological cytological screening tests.

Before my specialist exam, I started working with aspiration cytology, mainly examining thyroid, breast and bone lesions.

In 1991, I passed the pathology examination with excellent results, and in 2001, I passed the cytopathology examination with excellent results.

I have been working at the II. Institute of Pathology of the Semmelweis University of Medicine since October 1992, I was appointed assistant professor in 1997, and since 2010 I have been working as a clinical chief physician and head of the cytology unit.

In addition to education and routine diagnostic work, my colleagues and I evaluate the institute's more than four thousand aspiration cytology samples per year.

At the end of 1993, I organized the aspiration cytology outpatient clinic at the First Surgical Clinic, where we perform the sampling ourselves under ultrasound guidance. This clinic was supplemented by two more at the Radiology Clinic and the First Internal Medicine Clinic.

In 2000, I was elected secretary of the Cytodiagnostics Section of the Hungarian Society of Pathologists, and in 2009 my mandate was extended for another 4 years.

In 2004, I was elected to the Pathologist Professional College and to the board of the Hungarian Society of Pathologists.

I am a permanent expert of the National Medical Officer's Office in the breast cancer screening program.

I participated in domestic congresses with posters and presentations, as well as in further training courses. In April 2001, we organized the first Hungarian cytology congress, and I am the secretary of the scientific committee of the subsequent annual congresses.

I have also published numerous papers in Hungarian and foreign journals, and my impact factor is 26.
