The Role of the Microbiome
Recent scientific interest has turned to the gut microbiome, recognizing its key role in health and disease. The gut microbiome, also known as the gut flora, refers to the diverse community of microorganisms that inhabit the gastrointestinal tract. This ecosystem plays a crucial role in digestion, immune function, metabolism, and overall health. The gut microbiome contains over 3 million genes and produces thousands of metabolites that play a crucial role in regulating human health.
Digestion and nutrient absorption
Gut bacteria help break down food and promote energy production.
Immune system support
They regulate immune responses and provide protection against pathogens.
Metabolism and weight regulation
They affect energy balance and metabolic processes.
Vitamin production
Certain bacteria produce essential vitamins (e.g. B vitamins, K) and short-chain fatty acids.

What influences the microbiome?
Diet
A diet rich in fiber and fermented foods supports a healthy microbiome, while processed foods can reduce its diversity.
Lifestyle
Stress, sleep quality, physical activity, and medications (e.g. antibiotics) all affect your balance.
Dysbiosis – when the balance is upset
IBS, Crohn-betegség, colitis ulcerosa, SIBO, puffadás, székrekedés/hasmenés.
2. Anyagcsere-betegségek
Inzulinrezisztencia, elhízás, 2-es típusú cukorbetegség.
3. Neurológiai és pszichiátriai tünetek
Depresszió, szorongás, migrén, ADHD, autizmus spektrumzavarok.
4. Nőgyógyászati panaszok
Endometriózis, PCOS, meddőség, hormonális egyensúlyzavarok.
5. Autoimmun és egyéb betegségek
Reumatoid artritisz, szklerózis multiplex, allergiák, bőrproblémák, szív-érrendszeri betegségek.
Factors influencing the gut microbiome
Overall, a balanced gut microbiome plays an important role in metabolism, weight control, and disease prevention, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and some cancers.
In many cases, other tests, such as gastroscopy and colonoscopy, and general blood tests, do not show any differences in the background of existing complaints, when the shift can already be observed during the intestinal microbiome test. Thus, with this procedure, we have the opportunity to prevent and can help in revealing the problem even in difficult to diagnose cases.
Microbiome test
The microbiome study used at Villa Medicina is based on one of the most advanced, so-called “Shotgun” DNA sequencing technologies, which analyzes millions of base pairs to identify the species-level bacteria of the intestinal flora. This method provides a significantly more accurate picture of the intestinal ecosystem than traditionally used methods that work with fewer base pairs.
We maintain a close professional relationship with the international partner laboratory that performs the study, so we are assured of background support based on the latest scientific knowledge. Our expert has also received special training provided by the laboratory, so that the interpretation of the results obtained and the therapeutic recommendations are truly personalized and up-to-date.
When is it worth doing a microbiome test?
- Digestive system complaints (e.g. bloating, IBS, Crohn's disease)
- Hormonal disorders (e.g. PCOS, thyroid problems, infertility)
- Neurological/psychiatric symptoms (e.g. depression, migraines, behavioral problems)
- Autoimmune or allergic conditions
- Before or after a course of antibiotics
- As a complementary examination for skin problems, chronic infections, and cancer
How to take the microbiome test
- Home sampling
The stool sample must be collected at home, in a hygienic manner. The sampling kit can be ordered by mail or picked up at our clinic. The kit contains all necessary instructions. - Laboratory test
The sample is analyzed using modern DNA sequencing, which provides a detailed, species-level picture of the state of the intestinal flora. - Evaluation
Our medical expert analyzes the results and prepares a personalized evaluation, taking into account the previously completed questionnaire. - Consultation
We will explain the results and the recommended lifestyle and dietary changes during a one-hour personal meeting. - Therapy and Support
We will create a personalized therapy plan that includes dietary recommendations, targeted supplements, and mental support. We will support you throughout the treatment.
