FIRST TRIMESTER EXTENDED SCREENING
By the 12-13th week of pregnancy, almost all the organs of the foetus are fully developed, and with today's high-resolution ultrasound scanners, almost two-thirds of any developmental abnormalities can be detected. The extended first trimester screening used in our institute detects about 95-97% of the most common severe chromosomal abnormalities (Down's, Edwards, Patau syndromes). However, only one part of this screening is the examination of abnormalities caused by chromosomal abnormalities, as many other anatomical abnormalities can be detected. During the first trimester screening, special attention is paid to the detection of fetal cardiovascular abnormalities, as almost 90% of these serious abnormalities can be detected at this stage, given the right skills. If indicated, genetic counselling is provided. During the first genetic screening, both the images taken during the test and the results of the risk assessment are transmitted online to our expectant mothers.
SECOND TRIMESTER ANATOMICAL SCREENING
During the second trimester anatomical screening, possible developmental abnormalities are screened for. By the second trimester (19-20 weeks), due to the growth of the foetus, ultrasound screening can detect almost 90% of possible malformations and almost 100% of severe cardiac malformations. In addition to the examination of the parameters that characterise the size of the foetus, the 3D imaging of the brain and facial skull is performed, and the central nervous system can be examined in detail for the first time. The spine, the limbs - including the fingers - the chest, the lungs, the heart and large blood vessels, the integrity of the abdominal wall, the abdominal organs (stomach, intestines, gall bladder, liver, kidneys, bladder), the navel and the umbilical cord are also clearly visible in the more than 40 planes that are depicted during each scan. We also look for specific abnormalities that increase the risk of Down's syndrome.
THIRD TRIMESTER SCREENING
WEEK OF 28 - 31
Examination of the growth and development of the foetus in utero. During the third trimester ultrasound scan (28-31 weeks), we mainly check the intrauterine growth and development of the foetus, and measure the flow of the umbilical cord and cranial veins to check the function of the placenta. As most of the serious developmental anomalies can be detected during the second trimester ultrasound scan, the abnormalities detected at this stage are usually of minor importance, but it is important to be aware of them as they may need to be followed up after the birth of the baby (minor heart defects, kidney abnormalities, etc.).
